Image of Labour MP Anne Begg Labour MP Anne Begg has categorically denied involvement with any campaign against government proposals to abolish Attendance Allowance and Disabled Living Allowance for disabled people aged over 65, saying "the government is not 'axing benefits' as the [Daily Mail] article said. There is nothing for me to rebel against." An Early Day Motion has been signed by a number of MPs expressing concern over the proposals raised in the "Shaping the Future of Care Together" green paper to abolish Attendance Allowance and Disability Living Allowance, and there seems to be confusion all-round about exactly what is being proposed by the government - although it is clear to me from reading the relevant bits of the green paper that retaining the benefits as currently delivered is not seen as an option. It is currently claimed by 1.6 million people, and there is mounting concern that it is going to be scrapped in order to help fund the government's proposed social care insurance scheme. Ms Begg has written to ministers asking them to ensure that AA, and also Disabled Living Allowance for the over-65s, is retained. Other backbenchers who are also fighting the proposed cuts include Jeremy Corbyn and Roger Berry, chairman of the Commons disability group. Tory health spokesman, Andrew Lansley, has promised that they would retain the benefits. November 2009

image of nova-flo - click to enlargeNova-Flo™ is a simple new solution to the problem of bath floods. The great advantage of the Nova-Flo is that, once installed (a quick and simple job for a plumber), it needs no electricity or batteries, no maintenance, no external controls. The unit works by triggering magnetic valves to shut down the water flow whenever the bath is filled to the overflow level. A very small amount of water continues to run, until the user turns of the taps in the usual way, thereby re-setting the Nova-Flo. February 2009
