Travelling in a car or a wheelchair, supportive seating is important

Comfort wheelchairs

Whether or not it is ideal, for many people with complex disabilities, their wheelchair is the place where they tend to spend a lot of time.

A highly configurable wheelchair, such as the one shown here, enables you to provide support that conforms to the individual user's needs.

Trunk and head support, individually adjustable foot plates and armrests and a pommel all contribute to the versatile support.

Modular seating systems

Alternatively, a modular seating system which can be coupled with a powered or manual wheeled base, can be specifically tailored to meet complex needs.

This system can also be used on a height adjustable fixed base, so that the same degree of postural management can be achieved in all situations.

Proper assessment is essential to ensure that a comfortable and supportive seating system addresses both postural and pressure care issues.

Car seats

Car travel can be undertaken in a crash-tested wheelchair, suitably secured, or – for many children with complex needs – a specially designed car seat. Features to look out for include adjustable depth and height, so that it will be useful as the child grows; support accessories; deep padding; safety harness that is adjustable and comfortable; crash testing. Some car seats, such as the one on the left, can be fitted to a turntable, making it easier for the carer to position their charge in the seat.
