Local Energy Advice Partnership

Local Energy Advice Partnership

With electricity prices increasing yet again, many of us can probably do with some help when it comes to keeping warm and saving money. Read on to find out more about LEAP, a free service providing eligible households with advice on how to save money and energy.

What is LEAP?

Since 2015, the Local Energy Advice Partnership (LEAP) has been helping people all over England, Scotland and Wales with straightforward, practical advice on saving money and energy at home. Through handy hints for staying warm in the winter to tips on managing household bills, our goal is to make life a little easier for families everywhere.

A lot has changed over the last decade. We’ve seen new governments, lived through a global pandemic and watched conflicts overseas – all of which have made it tougher to keep up with the cost of living. It’s no surprise energy bills have become a real worry for many. That’s why our support and advice are more important than ever.

Free advice by phone and in person

Our service is completely free and personalised to meet the needs of each person we support. We offer advice both over the phone and in the comfort of people’s homes. Thanks to our broad network of Home Energy Advisers spanning England, Scotland and Wales, we can reach and help tens of thousands of vulnerable households each year, no matter where they live.

Our holistic approach addresses fuel poverty by helping residents identify where they can make energy savings throughout the home – and this often leads to significant financial savings. For instance, did you know keeping your thermostat on at a low temperature all day in the winter is more cost-efficient than turning it on and off? And that placing radiator foils behind radiators on external walls can help stop the heat leaking outside, keeping your house warmer?

We also help by providing advice on how to read and understand energy bills, calling energy suppliers to provide reader meetings, and installing free energy-saving measures such as low-energy lightbulbs and draught-proofing materials when we visit.

Our knowledgeable, compassionate advisers are always happy to answer questions and direct people to further local services where needed, ensuring our support continues beyond the initial call or home visit.

The above are just a few of the ways we help some of the 10% of the UK population who are experiencing fuel poverty.

LEAP provides free and impartial support to eligible households, including:

• Energy advice and guidance to help reduce energy bills
• Help with switching energy tariffs and understanding energy costs
• Income maximisation support, including benefit entitlement checks
• Referrals for fuel debt advice and specialist support
• Installation of simple energy-saving measures, such as LED light bulbs, draught proofing, radiator reflector panels, and other energy efficiency products (subject to eligibility)
• Advice on keeping homes warm and healthy
• Referrals for further energy efficiency improvements and funding opportunities, where available.
