Dance for multiple sclerosis
Scottish Ballet Elevate – Dance for MS
The Orkney Islands have the greatest incidence of multiple sclerosis in the world: one in 170 women who live there has the condition.
So it seems an excellent place for Scottish Ballet to trial their Elevate programme of dance for MS, the first of its kind in the UK.
Scientific studies have already shown that people who take part in structured dance classes find improvements in their balance, gait, co-ordination, leg strength, levels of fatigue and cognitive performance.

Accessible sessions for all abilities
Elevate dance sessions are designed to be very accessible, whatever the participant’s mobility. The range of options mean that people in wheelchairs and those who use walking aids can also take part.
Currently, multiple sclerosis can’t be cured, but there are various non-invasive treatments that can help people with the condition manage it better. Dance is certainly one of them, as is exercise more generally.
