New health monitoring tech

Founder’s grandfather inspires health monitoring tech

A revolutionary new tech startup that provides 24/7 contactless health monitoring for elderly care has been developed by a University of Southampton researcher who was inspired by personal concerns for the health of his elderly grandfather.

Alexandar Todorov (pictured here) founded SilaTech alongside Georgi Pachov and Plamen Dimitrov. The radar-based solution is easily positioned in a residence not unlike a smoke detector. It then instantly detects falls and changes in vital signs such as heart rate, and issues alerts both in room and to designated contacts.

An answer to the problem of devices not being worn

Being contactless, the device negates issues that current monitors face in that it isn’t worn and so can’t be removed. Moreover, the company’s proprietary algorithm can predict a range of health issues early enabling carers to take preventative action.

Currently falls and illness while unattended are the leading causes of hospital visits worldwide by elderly people. Silatech is looking to support elderly residents and carers at the 17,000 care homes in the UK and hope to secure funding to then go on to serve the estimated 84 million elderly people living alone in the Western world who would benefit from this innovation.

SilaTech is one of six tech startups looking to impress investors and mentors at the Future Worlds Demo Day on 11th June during London Tech Week.

SilaTech Co-Founder Alexandar Todorov said:

“I am passionately driven by this problem and am personally very keen to see it resolved. We have tried to get my grandfather to use a wearable health device, but says he doesn’t like it and is always taking it off. From talking to care home staff, I know this is a common problem with older people in care settings. This is what inspired me to consider repurposing my research to solve the problem.

We’re excited to be one of the startups showcased at this year’s Demo Day and hope to talk with DeepTech investors with experience in bringing technology to market in a business to business environment.”

Dr Alice Iles, Head of Tech Acceleration for Future Worlds said:

“With the right investors and support, SilaTech has the potential to reshape the future of elderly care on a global scale.

Investment will enable SilaTech to scale manufacturing, expand B2B partnerships, and bring this life-changing technology to care providers at speed. For investors, this is a unique opportunity to back a deeply personal, mission-driven innovation with proven demand, strong commercial scalability, and the power to make a measurable impact on one of the world’s most pressing healthcare challenges.”

The Future Worlds Cohort accelerates the most promising startup talent on campus, with startups flying to Silicon Valley to connect with the University’s network of investors, mentors, and other startup founders in California, before a select few being put forward to pitch at Demo Day.

Future Worlds has an amazing track record of success with three of their recent alumni being listed by Forbes 30 under 30, and their businesses receiving awards and funding from hugely prestigious investors, with over £110 million being raised by Future Worlds startups.
