Closomat – latest monthly webinar

Closomat webinar explores bathroom independence for people living with Crohn’s, IBS and diverticulitis

Closomat, the UK’s only specialist manufacturer of wash and dry toilets, is inviting occupational therapists and other healthcare professionals to join its latest free clinical webinar, exploring how bathroom adaptations and assistive technology can support people living with chronic bowel conditions to maintain independence, dignity and quality of life.

Taking place on Thursday 8th October at 11:00, Crohn’s, IBS & Diverticulitis: How environmental and assistive solutions can enable function will be presented by Lucy Leonard, Clinical Director at The Occupational Therapy Service.

The session will explore how Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and diverticulitis can affect everyday function, including the impact of fatigue, urgency and pain, and the importance of efficient toileting and personal hygiene.

Understanding the impact of the bathroom environment

For people managing chronic bowel conditions, access to an appropriate bathroom environment can have a significant impact on independence and confidence.

Lucy will explore how occupational therapists can assess the bathroom environment for barriers that may increase effort, stress or risk and consider practical ways to support an individual’s needs.

The webinar will look at environmental modifications and assistive technologies, including automated toileting solutions, and how these can support hygiene, energy conservation and self-management.

Attendees will also consider the importance of ensuring recommendations reflect the individual’s clinical needs, lifestyle and longer-term condition management.

Practical strategies for everyday practice

Lucy has 25 years’ post-graduate experience in occupational therapy, including more than 20 years working within statutory services as a clinical specialist and leading multidisciplinary teams.

She has also spent 10 years in private practice supporting people with a range of neurological, orthopaedic and polytrauma diagnoses and became Clinical Director of The Occupational Therapy Service in 2022.

By the end of the webinar, attendees will have explored how to:

• Understand how Crohn’s disease, IBS and diverticulitis can affect functional performance, including fatigue, urgency, pain and toileting and hygiene needs

• Identify bathroom barriers that may increase stress, risk and effort

• Consider environmental modifications and assistive technologies that can support hygiene, energy conservation and self-management

• Develop personalised recommendations that reflect clinical needs, lifestyle and long-term condition management

Robin Tuffley, Marketing Manager at Closomat, said:

“Living with a condition like Crohn’s, IBS or diverticulitis can affect so many aspects of day-to-day life, and having a bathroom that works for you can make a real difference.

“We want these webinars to give OTs useful ideas and practical advice they can take away and apply with the people they support. Lucy has a huge amount of clinical experience, so it will be a really valuable session and we’re looking forward to hearing her perspective.”

Ongoing programme of professional webinars

The webinar forms part of Closomat’s ongoing monthly programme of free professional education for occupational therapists and other healthcare professionals, bringing together clinical expertise and practical insight to support better outcomes, independence and dignity.

Crohn’s, IBS & Diverticulitis: How environmental and assistive solutions can enable function takes place online at 11am on Thursday 8th October 2026 and is free to attend.
