The toilet is for our son, Hadley, who has spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and low trunk muscle tone. His leg spasticity prevents him from walking or standing without assistance, while his reduced trunk control requires additional support to maintain a safe and comfortable sitting position. These physical challenges, combined with impacted fine motor skills, mean that he has never been able to use the toilet on his own. Now 15 years old, his desire for privacy and independence in daily routines has naturally increased. Like any teenager, he wants to do as much as he can for himself — and being able to manage his own personal care is a huge part of that.
Freedom and dignity ensured
As parent-carers, we also recognised that providing intimate care was becoming increasingly difficult as he’s grown. While that was certainly a consideration, the main reason for choosing a wash and dry toilet was to give him the freedom and dignity he deserves, allowing him to use the toilet independently and confidently, whilst also protecting and improving his self-esteem.
Consideration for the whole household
From the initial assessment, which was so helpful and well considered, to the installation, process couldn’t have been easier. The fitter arrived promptly and was both professional and friendly, taking the time to explain exactly what he was doing.
He was so sensitive to our young dog too, by preparing him when noise was going to happen and showing him the boxes and tools so that he didn’t become nervous, which was such a lovely touch. He handled everything, from the plumbing to the electrics, with total expertise, so we didn’t have to worry about a thing.
Quick and tidy procedure
What really impressed us was how tidy and mess-free the process was. There was minimal disruption, no dust, and absolutely nothing left for us to clean up afterward — not even the old toilet! The fitter took care of the removal and disposal too, leaving the space spotless and ready to enjoy. It looks as if the toilet has always been there – it fits the space perfectly.
It was genuinely fascinating to see how the unit came together.
