Airospring is produced from high-tech three-dimensional knitted spacer fabric, which provides a micro-climate for the skin. Three layers of the spacer fabric are used in the construction of the cushion, with each layer having different compression properties.

Each 3-D spacer fabric has been engineered to transfer moisture vapour, helping to keep the surface of the skin cool and dry, which is important in preventing skin breakdown and subsequent pressure damage. Heat causes the metabolic rate to increase, causes sweating, and makes the skin less able to tolerate pressure. It is claimed that wet skin has just four percent of the strength of dry skin.

Guidance from the EPUAP and NPUAP (European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel and the American National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel) states: “Heat increases the metabolic rate, induces sweating and decreases the tolerance of the tissue for pressure. When body heat cannot dissipate it will increase the risk of skin breakdown and may impede healing”. Recent tests of the Airospring cushions to EN11092 have confirmed their performance in dissipating perspiration.

The Airospring range are the only UK manufactured cushions which are made entirely from 3-D knitted spacer fabrics. Although slim in profile, the AS200 cushion provides superior pressure relief to either gel cushions or memory foam, neither of which provide uniform support.
